This thoughtful sermon-like essay, delivered at the 142nd anniversary celebration of Washington’s birthday, examines the Society’s aims, its reception in American life, and the principles that have guided the nation. It links memories of the Revolution to present responsibilities, urging readers to prioritize public virtue, faith, and the rule of law in a changing world.
- The founding purpose: to honor a turning point in independence and to persevere in remembrance through a society of fellowship.
- Core principles: devotion to divine guidance, self-government, equal rights, and the welfare of the country over private interests.
- Civic dangers and remedies: cautions about corruption, demagogues, and the despotism of powerful interests, with a call for moral leadership.
- Education and faith: a stance on public responsibility for education and the role of religion in sustaining liberty and character.
Ideal for readers of historical addresses, civic philosophy, and 19th-century American thought.
