About this title

Synopsis

An evening in 19th century Pittsburgh, a chapel filled with ambition, and a scholar addressing the future of language. Hear the university speak plainly. Wilson McCandless's commemorative academic address, delivered for the eighth anniversary of the Philological Institute at the Western University of Pennsylvania, survives as an academic speech transcript with uncommon immediacy. It moves between celebration and argument: why philology and linguistics matter, what classical studies can train in mind and character, and how language education advocacy belongs at the centre of a modern institution. Readable as a university anniversary oration yet grounded in practical ideals, it offers a clear view of western Pennsylvania academia at a moment when American universities were defining themselves. McCandless writes for an attentive public, not a specialist seminar. The result is a classical studies address with the warmth of ceremony and the edge of debate, approachable for anyone curious about the early University of Pittsburgh and essential as a linguistics students reference for the discipline's civic ambitions today. For collectors and researchers, this primary source speech is also a compact piece of university history research: names, concerns, and priorities recorded in the cadences of public address. As part of a wider historical lecture collection, it rewards close reading and context-hungry browsing alike. A sharp reminder: universities are first made by voices, not buildings alone. Out of print for decades and now republished by Alpha Editions. Restored for today's and future generations. More than a reprint -- a collector's item and a cultural treasure.
