A rediscovered classic, originally published in 1938, and now an international best-seller, it reveals the extraordinary power of the pen as a weapon.
“This modern story is perfection itself. It is the most effective indictment of Nazism to appear in fiction.” –The New York Times Book Review
“A tale already known and profoundly appreciated by members of my generation. It is to our part in World War II what Uncle Tom’s Cabin was to the Civil War.” –Kurt Vonnegut
“Address Unknown serves not only as a reminder of Nazi horrors but as a cautionary tale in light of current racial, ethnic, and nationalistic intolerance.” –Publisher’s Weekly
“Address Unknown will leave you breathless with admiration.” –Star Tribune (Minneapolis)
With a new 2015 Introduction.
First published in 1938, Address Unknown resonated within the United States, changing many Americans’ views of the growing conflict in Europe. Kressmann Taylor’s revealing tale of the consequences of genocidal fascism remains as sadly relevant today as when it was first written.
Kressmann Taylor (1903-1996) won national acclaim in 1939 with the publication of Address Unknown. She went on to write three more books and a dozen short stories, one of which was dramatized on CBS Studio One, and another was included in The Best American Short Stories of 1956. For nineteen years, she was a popular professor of creative writing and journalism at Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania, where she was the first woman to earn tenure.
