Reviews
Grade 10-12 The first third of this book includes chapters that explain the requirement of an admissions essay and its relative importance in the college application process, the step-by-step techniques for writing an effective one, and solutions to common mistakes. The remainder is comprised of over 50 actual student essays (well-written ones). The sample essays cover a variety of topics. There are brief critical comments following some of the essays, pointing out strong features and suggestions for improvements. The assortment of essay subjects, writing styles, and points of view makes the section interesting and informative. Prospective essayists get a feel for the craft of producing a concise, impressive, and self-revealing piece that will enhance the rest of the college application. This is similar to the treatment of the personal essay in Frank C. Leana's Getting into College (Hill & Wang, 1980), but is the sole focus here. A helpful guide for students concerned about putting their best foot forward in preparing their admissions essay. Diane P. Tuccillo, Mesa Public Library, Ariz.
