About the Authors

Benjamin Constant de Rebecque, n� le 25 octobre 1767 � Lausanne et mort le 8 d�cembre 1830 � Paris, inhum� au cimeti�re du P�re-Lachaise, est un romancier, homme politique, et intellectuel (philosophe) fran�ais d'origine vaudoise. R�publicain et engag� en politique depuis 1795, il soutient le coup d'�tat du 18 fructidor an V (4 septembre 1797), puis celui du 18 Brumaire (an VIII : 9 novembre 1799). Il devient, sous le Consulat, le chef de l'opposition lib�rale d�s 1800. Apr�s avoir quitt� la France pour la Suisse puis l'Allemagne, il se rallie � Napol�on pendant les Cent jours, et revient en politique sous la Restauration. �lu d�put� en 1819, il le sera encore � sa mort en 1830. Chef de file de l'opposition lib�rale, connue sous le nom des c�l�bres � Ind�pendants �, il est l'un des orateurs les plus en vue de la Chambre des d�put�s et d�fend le r�gime parlementaire. Lors de la r�volution de Juillet, il soutient l'installation de Louis-Philippe sur le tr�ne. Auteur de nombreux essais sur des questions politiques ou religieuses, Benjamin Constant a �galement �crit des romans psychologiques sur le sentiment amoureux comme Le Cahier rouge (1807), o� se retrouvent des �l�ments autobiographiques de son amour pour Madame de Sta�l, et Adolphe (1816).

Jacques-Henry Bornecque fut professeur � l'universit� de Caen puis � l'universit� de Paris-Nord. Sp�cialiste de la litt�rature fran�aise moderne, il livra une importante histoire de la litt�rature en deux volumes, La France et sa litt�rature. En plus d'essais sur Alphonse Daudet, Paul Verlaine, St�phane Mallarm� et Auguste de Villiers de L'Isle-Adam, il �tablit les �ditions critiques de grandes oeuvres du XIX^e si�cle.
