An Advanced Arithmetic: Theoretical and Practical (Classic Reprint)

This book constitutes a radical reappraisal of ancient Greek mathematics, primarily focusing on higher arithmetic. By exploring the subject within its proper historical context, the author uncovers the true nature of the discipline and its central importance in ancient Greek thought. The author reveals that the concept of fractions was not fully understood by ancient Greek mathematicians and the actual role they played was vastly different from the one attributed to them. Moreover, the book argues that Euclidean geometry originated as a result of these deficiencies and explores how it can be viewed as an extension of Pythagorean number theory. The author thus provides a new perspective on the development of Greek mathematics and its influence on Western thought.
