About the Author

Hal Sutphen is educational director for the Cruising Rally Association, which conducts the West Marine Caribbean 1500 and Passagemaker Seminars. He is a frequent contributor to Blue Water Sailing, Ocean Navigator and Cruising World, and is one of a small group of experts authorized to moderate the national Safety at Sea Seminars under the auspices of Cruising World and US Sailing. His thousands of sea miles include seven passages to the Caribbean and five to Bermuda.

Captain Sutphen's Naval career included command of a 19,000-ton ammunition ship, the NROTC Unit Hampton Roads' 50' sail training ketch, and an assignment as Director of Navy Sailing, overseeing the Navy's professional and recreational sailing programs worldwide.
