The Advanced HTML Companion is authoritative on the subject of HTML, providing a great deal of how-to information. However, the book sometimes suffers from a lack of organization, making it difficult to use as an HTML ready-reference guide. The book's main focus is to teach you how to accomplish basic Web page design in HTML. The chapters on forms, tables, and frames will guide you step by step, showing examples of how the HTML code renders in a browser. There are also chapters on images, color, multimedia, and more advanced techniques, such as style sheets and CGI. Throughout these how-to chapters, there are examples of good and bad HTML construction and links to places on the Web for more information.

The Advanced HTML Companion's appendix includes an alphabetical HTML tag reference, which shows proper usage of tags and samples. However, explanations of how the tags work are spread throughout the book, so there are always multiple places to look for each tag. Fortunately, the book has a comprehensive index. Organizational problems aside, the book contains excellent HTML tips and tricks for those willing to wade through the text.
