This is a 1978 new impression of the 1889 Edition and includes the Four Page November 1889 Preface by author Salmone. Two foldout printed inserts with three titles- How to Use the Dictionary, Table of Arabic Derived Forms, and Notes. There is an inked price on the back endpaper. No other marks and interior text pages are bright, tight, and white. It is universally acknowledged that Arabic is the most important of all Oriental languages. Indeed, it may be regarded as the Latin and Greek of the Muhammadan languages of the East, and even bears a closer relation to them than the classical languages bear to the vernaculars of the West. It is, moreover, the language of the sacred book of the Muhammadan world and it has a vast and varied literature. Apart from the fact that Arabic is a key to a proper knowledge of several other Oriental languages and dialects, it is a living language spoken or understood throughout the world of Islam. One of the obstacles to the study of this language has been the want, keenly felt for many years, of a suitable and practical Arabic-English Dictionary. The existing Dictionaries are either too bulky and expensive, and of no practical utility to the ordinary student, or too small and of vocabulary-like dimensions. The Dictionary that is needed is one which, while possessing all the comprehensiveness of the larger works, is in a portable form and within the reach of all students. To strike the happy medium is never an easy matter; but the author believed he had succeeded in founding a system by which the object of producing a Dictionary which is comprehensive, handy and cheap has been attained.
