Unlike standard instructional pool books that focus on what to do and how to do it—the mere basics—Advanced Pool teaches you why you do what you do—the next step to playing better pool. George Fels emphasizes the thinking side of what is a decidedly mental game and explains the various popular pool games conceptually rather than on a ball-by-ball basis. You win this game by consistently stringing shots together, pocketing one ball while stopping the cue someplace advantageous to pocketing another. Covering the games of Advanced Straight Pool, Advanced Eight-Ball, and Advanced Nine-Ball, Fels instructs you on the finer points of break shots, inside/outside English, intentional scratches, rhythm, and dead stroke ("pool's magic kingdom"). Filled with more than one hundred clear, instructive diagrams. Advanced Pool will have you shooting stick like a pro!

Reviews
Expanding on his earlier work Mastering Pool (Contemporary Bks., 1977, o.p.), Fels has produced a guide for the player who wishes to advance beyond the basics. He concentrates here on the mental aspects of the game. His book's major sections cover straight pool, eight-ball, and nine-ball, the three major pool variations that Fels claims best illustrate his approach to the game. Within each section, he describes the major differences between the variant and other pool games, then gives tips on strategy and tactics that can improve a player's game. More than 100 diagrams help illustrate the text. This is a good addition to libraries needing something other than basic texts on an increasingly popular game.?Terry Madden, Boise State Univ.
