A highly useful volume which bridges the gap between basic guides to philately and the sophisticated domain of collection specialization. Krause methodically explores many areas in which advanced collectors must have a working familiarity, e.g., forgery detection, alteration pitfalls, expert services. The book's scope is quite comprehensive and the treatment of subjects is fair and balanced. Krause often admonishes readers to be aware of when to consult a higher authority, bibliographic or human, and to be ever conscious of condition and quality of items acquired. He suggests neglected (and not too pricey) areas for specializing and provides tips on exhibition mounting, collection building, and auction purchasing. Recommended for public libraries, large or small, by virtue of the solid content and low price. This volume is better than Krause's work for newcomers, Stamp Collecting: An Illustrated Guide for Adult Collectors (Betterway Pubns., 1989).
