The opening chapter sets out a generalized observation model in which the noise may be multiplicative or signal-dependent, not only purely additive. Separate chapters then take up known, random and composite signals under that model. The known-signal case is derived from a generalized form of the Neyman-Pearson fundamental lemma. Two chapters cover detectors built on signs and ranks, for known and for random signals. Another drops the usual assumption of independent samples and studies detection in weakly-dependent noise, a problem that becomes more serious as sampling rates rise. The final chapter deals with detection from fuzzy observations. Distributed and sequential detection are left out on purpose.
