Advances in Motor Learning and Control surveys the latest, most important advances in the field, surpassing the confines of debate between proponents of the information processing and dynamical systems.
Zelaznik, editor of the Journal of Motor Behavior from 1989 to 1996, brings together a variety of perspectives. Some of the more difficult topics-such as behavioral analysis of trajectory formation and the dynamic pattern perspective of rhythmic movement-are presented in tutorial fashion. Other chapters provide a foundation for understanding increasingly specialized areas of study.
Howard N. Zelaznik, PhD, is professor of Health, Kinesiology and Leisure Studies at Purdue University.
The executive editor of the Journal of Motor Behavior from 1989 to 1996, he also is the author or coauthor of numerous book chapters, journal articles, and book reviews. Zelaznik collaborated with R.C. Schmidt to write about speed-accuracy trade-off theory, published in Psychological Review, and about movement variability, published in a chapter of the book Variability and Motor Control (Human Kinetics). He also has written on bimanual coordination in collaboration with E.A. Franz and G. McCabe.
Zelaznik earned his PhD in physical education from the University of Southern California in 1978. From 1986 to 1989 he was section editor on motor control for the Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport.
A frequent reviewer for the Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance and the Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory and Cognition, Zelaznik is president of the North American Society for the Psychology of Sport and Physical Activity. He also is a Fellow both of the American Psychological Society and the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education.
