Celebrate the year 2002 with this 45th anniversary edition of Chase's Calendar of Events! Packed with more than 12,000 entries, Chase's delivers its wonderful mixture of special celebrations and observances for every day of the year.
What's special about 2002? The United Nations has declared this year to be the International Year of Mountains. The World Cup will be held in Korea and Japan and the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. And it will be Queen Elizabeth's Golden Jubilee.
In the Spotlight section, we feature the 250th anniversary of the Gregorian calendar in North America and the 200th anniversary of the founding of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. We commemorate the 175th anniversary of railroading in the United States with the chartering of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad. In addition, 2002 will bring the 150th anniversary of the publication of Uncle Tom's Cabin and of Roget's Thesaurus. The first Ph.D. was awarded to a woman by an American university 125 years ago and the first major tennis championship was held at Wimbledon that same year. One hundred years ago the Teddy bear was named for President Roosevelt and the Dow Jones Industrial Average reached a high of 64. Seventy-five years ago Lindbergh made his solo flight across the Atlantic and "The Jazz Singer," the first "talkie," was released. Fifty years ago a UNIVAC computer projected the election of Eisenhower and Nixon for CBS and a polio epidemic affected more than 50,000 Americans. And 25 years ago "Roots" had Americans riveted to their TV sets for eight straight evenings.
New in Chase's this year are the dates of the worst earthquake of the 20th century, the opening of the first drive-in movie, the launch of the first tourist into space and the Great Backyard Bird Count. We've added birthdays for Vicente Fox, Ichiro Suzuki, Kate Beckinsale, Benicio Del Toro, Carson Daly, and many others.
For broadcasters, promotions planners, activity leaders, editors and writers, the Chase's 45th anniversary edition delivers facts, fresh ideas and special reasons to celebrate!
