The Adventures of Ralph and Elmer: This Tomato is for You!Is the first in a series of books designed to provide accurate information for elementary school aged children regarding the origin of various fruits, vegetables, and herbs. In this story Elmer makes a journey to Ralph s little flowerpot home inside the Professor s greenhouse, Elmer has come to live with his grandfather because something has happened to Elmer s parents. (We will not know the full story until the next book.) The Professor understands snail language and has told Ralph a great deal about tomatoes. Ralph tries to explain the nutritional value of tomatoes to Elmer. Tomatoes are an excellent source of Vitamin C. Elmer is impressed by his grandfather s wisdom, but is more interested in exploring the wonder of the greenhouse. Elmer, being an adventurous young snail, soon finds himself being carried by a torrent of water toward a large open drain. Will Elmer be saved from certain disaster? Will Elmer learn the origin of the tomato? Will Elmer learn of his family s fate as they traveled along the Oregon Trail in an early American journey?
