Illustrated with a frontispiece of Virgil's bust and with several in-text wood engravings. The Latin text arranged and the English notes prepared by Charles Anthon, the famed American classicist who holds a place in Mormon history as the man who examined Joseph Smith's findings from the golden plates. Meyer Reinhold, "Anthon, Charles." Anthon was respected for his expertise on ancient philology. The scholar introduced new standards of translation and critical examination of the Latin language to American university classrooms. He wrote a number of textbooks on classical languages, and is remembered fondly with the Anthon Professorship of Latin at Columbia University, where he spent his career teaching and researching. A handsome early edition of Anthon's Virgil, carefully produced. A tiny split to the front joint's corner and a small nick to the spine, the preliminaries show a bit of foxing.
