Map. Uncolored engraving. Sheet measures 17 3/4" x 24". This gorgeous circa 1691 map of the Old World is by Vincenzo Coronelli. Dedicated to Jacobo Marcello, the map is based on classical geography and covers the Eastern Hemisphere including the continents of Europe, most of Asia and Africa. The northeast parts of Asia, China and Japan are not included. Africa is only depicted as far south as the Tropic of Capricorn. A series of rings surround the map noting climate zones, degrees of latitude and various other information. The 12 zodiac signs are noted on the outer edge of the circles.The lower corners includes explanations while the upper corners show dedications and a coat of arms. The map is in good condition with minor wear and some toning along the original centerfold. Original plate mark is visible.Vincenzo Coronelli (1650-1718) was a Franciscan priest and renowned mathematician and cartographer. He was appointed official Cosmographer to the Venetian Republic in 1685 and founded the world's earliest geographic society, L'Accademia Cosmografica degli Argonauti. He was known best for his globes, which he made for prominent rulers such as Louis XIV and the Duke of Parma. This map is an excellent example of his work. Seller Inventory # 273567
