Born in Seville the Arab traveller and geographer Al-Hasan ibn Muhammad al-Wazzan al-Fasi (c.1494-1554) spent his early years travelling extensivly through Africa and the Near East. He visited Fez, Morocco, Tunis, went across the Sahara Desert to Timbuktu, and he visited the native states on the Upper Niger to Cairo, Houssa, Bornou and Lake Chad. In 1517 however he was caught by Christian pirates and taken to Rome. He was there presented to Pope Leo X whose name "Leo" he adopted as his surname.
