Reviews:
Grade 6-12-This first book in a projected three-volume series begins with an introduction to slave trade in Africa, followed by a detailed look at the era of slavery in the United States. The freeing of slaves during the Civil War Era and the difficult times they had during Reconstruction are described in detail. Also discussed are African Americans who served in the military and who pioneered the West. The focus then switches to the civil rights movement in the 20th century. Vignettes of people who have played key roles in African American history are included. The smooth, clear, and engaging writing style coupled with the excellent-quality full-color photographs make this a superb title that's sure to be used by students and teachers alike.
