About this Item
A near fine copy, in a very good dust plus jacket. The binding of navy cloth is clean and tight, with gleaming gilt lettering to the spine. Everything is square and tight, with sharp unbumped edges and corners. Inside the contents are clean and bright and, other than a small inked date (1945), there are no ownership inscriptions or other markings of any kind. The four coloured folding maps are all present, correctly folded, and in perfect condition. The very clean dust jacket is unclipped (15s. net), and is almost fully intact with only trivial edgewear. Superb shelf appearance. It is now protected in a removable mylar cover. In 1940 Macmillan acquired the copyright to several of Churchill's works, including this one, when Thornton Butterworth, his primary publisher since the late 1920's, descended into bankruptcy. This is the second Macmillan printing of 1944. From the jacket flap: "Victory in the last war was a climax but by no means a conclusion to the dreadful course history had taken in the preceeding few years. The vast and sombre picture of events that followed the Treaty of Versailles could only be presented by a writer of Mr. Churchill's powers, and in this book his first-hand knowledge of men and matters gives authority and permanent value to the chronicle of the years that were so fraught with destiny for all the peoples of the world".
