Against the Clock: The Obsession, Risk, and Reward of FKT Racing

When the finish line disappears and only the clock remains, what drives you forward?

FKT racing, Fastest Known Time, strips away the comfortable structure of organized races and replaces it with something raw: you, a route, and an unblinking stopwatch. No entry fees, no aid stations, no medals. Just the honest question of how fast you can move from point A to point B, and what you'll learn about yourself in the process.

Against the Clock takes you inside this quietly obsessive world where athletes chase records on remote trails, urban corridors, and mountain ridges. From pre-dawn logistics and GPS breadcrumbs to the psychology of racing alone and the ethics of risk, this book explores what happens when speed meets self-reliance.

You'll discover:

• The culture and customs that govern FKT attempts, from verification rituals to community accountability
• Practical strategies for training, navigation, nutrition, and managing the mental loops that come with time-based goals
• The hidden costs of obsession and the difference between discipline that builds and fixation that breaks
• Real stories from the edge—botched attempts, clever improvisation, and the quiet heroism of turning back
• The future of the sport as commercialization, technology, and crowd impact reshape what FKTs mean

Whether you're an ultrarunner, a curious cyclist, or someone who appreciates stories of stubborn determination, this book offers a clear-eyed look at a sport where the only opponent is time—and sometimes yourself. It's about chasing minutes, but it's also about muddy shoes, honest mistakes, and the communities that form around shared trails and ridiculous goals.

The clock is watching. What will you do when no one else is?
