Both of these books are about improving longevity and the quality of life through applied knowledge of current research on vitamins and aging. Pauling, renowned octogenarian and advocate of Vitamin C, delivers an in-depth analysis of the continuing evidence for the benefits of large daily amounts of this nutrient, proclaiming its anti-viral, anti-neoplastic, and anti-aging effects. The book, though readable, is broadly focused. On the other hand, Kaufman, a nutritionist, offers the reader individual instruction on putting this new knowledge into practice. (He, too, recommends large doses of Vitamin C, citing Pauling as his expert). He includes in this well-balanced handbook detailed tables on dietary supplements (including effects and doses); an effective detoxification diet; advice on environmental and mental stress, life habits and attitudes; and a good bibliography and resource directory.
