Reviews: A new military-sf writer tackles one of the subgenre's tried-and-true themes, that of humans obliged by war with aliens to be conditioned to think like the aliens in order to develop methods for defeating them. Although McCarthy cannot be awarded the palm for breaking new ground, he can be praised for a well-told tale that combines brisk action, intelligent conceptualization of the aliens, and deeper characterization of the humans than is often found in military sf. An above-average debut recommended for any collection serving a sizable action-oriented-sf-fantasy clientele. Roland Green
