The book opens with a squirrel's arrival on her windowsill on November 19, 1970, and follows individual animals through naming, characterization, and the rhythms of their visits, with chapters devoted to memorable individuals (Little White Ears, Runty, Notchko, Genius, Sweetie, Halftail, Blackbuster) and to broader themes (squirrels' education, social behaviour, rules and generalizations, urban woes).
