Spruch, professor of physics at Rutgers University, Newark, brings a scientist's discipline to the recording but writes in the voice of a fond observer. The book opens with a squirrel's arrival on her windowsill on November 19, 1970, and follows individual animals through naming, characterization, and the rhythms of their visits, with chapters devoted to memorable individuals (Little White Ears, Runty, Notchko, Genius, Sweetie, Halftail, Blackbuster) and to broader themes (squirrels' education, social behaviour, rules and generalizations, urban woes).
