Aids to Reflection in the Formation of a Manly Character on the Several Grounds of Prudence, Morality, and Religion

Aids To Reflection In The Formation Of A Manly Character On The Several Grounds Of Prudence, Morality, And Religion by Samuel Taylor Coleridge is a didactic collection of aphorisms and essays on cultivating a disciplined mind. The work unfolds across three central domains: Prudence (the prudent ordering of life and self-government), Morality (the duties we owe to others and the cultivation of virtue), and Religion (the framework of faith that grounds truth, life, and ultimate meaning). It includes introductory aphorisms about reflection, followed by extensive sections on moral and religious aphorisms, and later broader treatments of spiritual religion, anchored by judgments about language, reason, and the Christian dispensation. The Preface explains Coleridge’s aim to elevate reasoning and self-knowledge, to distinguish Reason from Understanding, and to defend Christian belief against skepticism by appealing to conscience, history, and the inward life. The text blends quotation, commentary, and exhortation, urging readers—especially educated youths and future ministers—to reflect, doubt less, and seek a rational yet devout basis for belief and action.
