Beginning with a chapter on "The Land", the author devotes the next 11 of 19 chapters to the Russian period of Alaska's history. The remaining 7 concern the American period. The book covers Russian exploration and settlement along the shores of northwestern America, of the Russian -American company and its great general manager, Baranov.
