Over 50 letters and cards, many of which are handwritten and/or quite substantive -- not merely quickie congratulations and best wishes -- from the cream of the music world at the time, plus a few other famous performers. Some of the letters have hand-drawn illustrations, and bars of music are written by a number of the well-wishers. Among the letter-writers are Ricardo Muti, Claudio Abbado, Kurt Masur, Gerald Schwartz, Sir Neville Marriner, Maxim Shostakovich, Lukas Foss, Andre Previn, Christoph Eschenbach, not to mention top record executives perhaps not so well-known out of the industry. A highlight of the collection, though, is the long letter from pantomimist Marcel Marceau, with his delightful illustrations. Folio, 38 by 28 cm. Several photos are among the letters, plus one, separate, of Kurt Masur with the celebrant.
