Carbon typescript, docketed "My copy", approx. 268 pp., with corrections throughout in ink and pencil; with two versions of the foreword. 1 vols. 4to. The typescript for Stark's 1958 book retracing the footsteps of Alexander the Great through modern Turkey, the third of four successful Turkish travelogues, "books that no English-speaking tourist visiting postwar Turkey failed to carry along. More than any other author, Freya opened up Anatolia" (Geniesse, 354). A choice complete manuscript from the intrepid and adventurous Freya Stark (1893-1993), author and traveller in the greater Middle East who moved in military and intelligence circles during the years of the second world war. "Through her late sixties Freya continued to take tough trips alone by foot, or mule, or taxi. They were coin for her writing, and she did need money. … Her ambitious third in 1958 was Alexander s Path, in which Freya duplicated the brilliant young Macedonian s marches from Phrygia to Pamphylia and re-created the strategies of the Greeks against the Persians" (Geniesse.). With an note from the author, "Only the rough draft but it might amuse you"; and with 18 black and white photographs (captioned by Stark on verso) in envelope addressed to Michael Stewart at the British Embassy, Ankara, docketed "taken by Freya Stark during the mule ride up the Zanthes Valley Aug/Sept 1957," with an annotated two-page typescript, "Note of a Journey Made with Freya Stark in August and September 1957," recording a seven-day journey from Örenköy to Denizli by mule and Land Rover, including travel times, distance, and road conditions. Michael Stewart had briefly been her boss in the immediate postwar years, when he was a young Ministry of Information office in Rome and she did public relations work for the Allied military government.
