The title of this concluding volume (following volume 1, covering the years 1861-1910, LJ 4/15/85) is somewhat of a misnomer: at the time of his death Lowe had traced Whitehead's life and thought only to 1929, and the editor has supplied only a brief narrative of the remaining years. Thus, the important works of the last period (e.g., Adventures of Ideas , Nature and Life , and Modes of Thought ) have not been dealt with, and we get a picture of Whitehead in America--at Harvard--for only a few years. Further, two of the chapters have been "principally authored" by a research assistant. Still, as the editor notes, the two books give us "as much as it is possible to know about the life of a man who had the bulk of his papers destroyed."--Leon H.
