The Algebra of Logic (Classic Reprint)

From algebra to universal logic: discover how symbols and rules shape reasoning.

This book traces the rise of symbolic logic from early ideas about arithmetic and a general language of thought to the modern notion of a calculus for reasoning. It explains how thinkers like Leibniz envisioned a universal characteristic and a calculus ratiocinator, and shows how later work by Boole, De Morgan, Frege, Peano, Russell, and others built on that vision. The result is a clear, practical look at the algebra of logic and its role in mathematics and philosophy.

• How symbols express ideas directly and how logical operations are formalized as rules of transformation.
• The distinction between a symbolic calculus and a universal language for reasoning.
• Ways to treat propositions, inclusions, and variables with a concise, algebraic mindset.
• Where classical logic stands in the broader development of mathematical logic and theory of relations.
