8vo, 21.5cm, the first edition, 217p., (including 23 rear pages of ads), tipped-in errata slip, large folding partly coloured lithographed map, 3 full page lithographed plate views, many text illustrations, in the original blue decorated pebbled cloth, gilt pictorial titles and border decorations over black stamped illustrations (musket etc) on the cover, bevelled boards, some slight expert colour restoration on the binding, a fine bright clean copy, rare thus. (On). The text is divided into three parts, Part I. Topographical and Historical Notes, Nipigeon Lake and River to Thunder Bay. Port Arthur, 1800-87. Fort William. Part II. Our New Mines. Part III. Geology of Algoma West. Early explorations. &c. Contains a Business Directory of Port Arthur. Also the Legend of Thunder or how Thunder Bay obtained its name. We have had only two copies, catalogue 53, (1983) and then cat189. Including a history and description of Port Arthur (from 1800), Fort William (from 1880), and geology and mining in the Thunder Bay area. A business directory of Port Arthur occupies pp. [191]-217. According to Morley the folding map is often wanting and some copies may have been issued without it. The two lithographed plates are titled Sketch of Beaver Mountain Silver Mining Location. Near Port Arthur. Looking West From Magazine At Foot of Hill and Reduction Works on Silver Creek. Beaver Mine. Looking North. The author, a civil engineer and topographical surveyor, was employed as a land valuator and inspector for the C.P.R. and also examined and reported on mining locations in Northern Ontario.
