The Algorithm Will Be With You Shortly: A Mostly Harmless Guide to AI, Work, and Why Your Toaster Might Be Smarter Than Your Boss

Your job is probably safe. Your job description is another matter.

Every week brings a headline announcing that AI will take half the jobs by Thursday, and another promising it will fix everything else by Friday. Both are wrong. The real story is more useful to anyone who has to turn up to work on Monday.

The Algorithm Will Be With You Shortly is a practical, funny guide to what AI is doing to work right now: which tasks it takes, which jobs it creates, and what the people coming out ahead do differently.

Inside:

• Why the job-loss headlines get the arithmetic wrong, and where the real displacement is happening
• How AI creates work as well as removing it, and how to be first in the queue for the new kind
• What Asia's relationship-first approach to technology can teach Western managers
• The skills worth building now, from prompt engineering to the emotional intelligence no algorithm has yet managed to fake

Gari Johnson has spent four decades selling technology across Asia-Pacific. That is long enough to have sat through every revolution the industry announced, and to have watched most of them arrive late. He writes for managers who want to know what is real, professionals who want to stay employable, and anyone who suspects their toaster has better judgement than their boss.

Mostly harmless. Occasionally useful. Reliably cheaper than a consultant.
