কে লিখিবে উহাদের ইতিহাস ?

উহাদের ইতিহাস তেমন কেহ লিখিল না ....উহাদের কথা তেমন কেহ বলার চেষ্টাও করিল না , সমাজবিদ্যা ও ইতিহাসে উহারা তেমন ভাবে আলোচিত হইলো না , উহারাও লিখিলো না নিজেদের ইতিহাস , কিন্তু কেন ? উহারা কারা ? কাণ্ডজ্ঞানহীন, বিকৃতমস্তিষ্ক, উন্মাদ- সহজ বাংলা ভাষায় পাগল। যুগ যুগ ধরে ওরা কেমনভাবে আলোচিত বা সমালোচিত। সমাজবিদ্যাচর্চার দুর্ভাগ্য ওরাও লেখেনি ওদের ইতিহাস! পাগল ! যাদের কথাবার্তা বা নীরবতা সভ্যসমাজের দৃষ্টিতে অসমীচীন, নিরর্থক বা হাস্যকর। আবার বাহ্যিক আচরণ স্বভাবসিদ্ধ নয়। সভ্যসমাজের দৃষ্টিতে বিকৃত মস্তিষ্কের বহিঃপ্রকাশ। সমাজ ও সভ্যতা মনে করে যাদের মনের মধ্যে অন্যরকম এক অবস্থা সৃষ্টি করেছে কিংবা যাদের প্রকৃতিগত প্রবৃত্তি সমাজের কাছে যুক্তিহীন , বা ননসেন্সদের মতো। তাদের এসব আচরণ, আত্মভাব ও অঙ্গস্বভাব সম্পর্কে সভ্য মানুষের দৃষ্টিভঙ্গি কী হতে পারে , তা আমরা সবাই জানি। কারও দৃষ্টিতে এরা মানসিক রোগী, কারও দৃষ্টিতে এরা উন্মাদ। হয়তো ওরা অপেক্ষাকৃত বেশ ক্ষিপ্ত কিংবা বিনয়ী। তাই তাদের অযৌক্তিক কথোপকথন শুনতে ও নীরব আচরণ বুঝতে রাজী নয় সভ্য মানুষ। তাই এদের স্থান পাগলাগারদে কিংবা কোনো এক মানসিক হাসপাতালে। সুদূর অতীত থেকে শুরু করে বর্তমান সময় পর্যন্ত এরা এভাবেই মানুষের কাছে অবহেলিত হয়ে আসছে বারং বার। যাইহোক, হয়তো ওরা অস্বাভাবিক, উন্মাদ, কাণ্ডজ্ঞানহীন কিংবা ননসেন্স। যা-ই বলা হোক না কেন, আপাতত ‘পাগল’ শব্দটির উপর ভিত্তি করেই সমাজবিদ্যাচর্চায় ঔপনিবেশিক বাংলায় পাগলদের ইতিহাস আলোকপাত করা অবশ্যই দরকার।

No one spoke about them... No one tried to tell, they were not discussed in history, they did not write their own history, but why? Who are they? Senseless, perverted, insane - in simple Bengali Pagal. How they have been discussed or criticized age after ages. Unfortunately, Society has not written their history either! Pagal ! Those whose speech or silence is inappropriate, useless or ridiculous in the eyes of civilized society. Again, their external behavior is not natural. In the eyes of civilized society, they are the manifestation of a perverted brain. Society and civilization consider those whose minds have created a different state or whose natural instincts are irrational to society, or like nonsense. We all know what civilized people's view of their behavior, personality and physical characteristics may be. In some eyes, they are mentally ill, in others, they are insane. Maybe they are relatively angry or modest. That is why civilized people are not willing to listen to their irrational conversations and understand their silent behavior. That is why their place is in a madhouse or a mental hospital. From the distant past to the present, they have been neglected by people in this way time and again. However, maybe they are abnormal, crazy, senseless or nonsense. Whatever may be said, for now, it is definitely necessary to shed light on the history of the mad in colonial Bengal in sociological practice based on the word 'Pagal'.
