Synopsis

"The Almanac of the 50 States "has been created in order to provide a comprehensive, easy to use, state statistical reference book. It presents a general overview of every state, along with tables of comparative ranking. The book is divided into 2 parts. The 1st, State Profiles, is comprised of 52 individual profile sections: one for each of the 50 states, one for the District of Columbia, and one for the U. S. in summary. Each of these profiles is 8 pages long, each utilizes the same format organized into 13 subject categories, and each has been compiled from the same sources of information. The result is a set of basic data profiles which are readable, understandable, and provide a strong basis for comparative analysis. The individual profiles are the heart of the book. Information selected for the profiles has been chosen to include those items which have the greatest general appeal to the broadest cross-section of users. The information comes from the latest reports of federal government agencies, augmented with data from business and trade organizations. No new surveys or original material is included, as the objective is to provide the most vital and significant information about each state, from the most reliable and respected collectors of data. A complete review of the profiles is provided below. The 2nd part of the book, Comparative Tables, is composed of tables of ranking. The 54 tables each list the states in rank order for selected characteristics chosen from the state profiles. The purpose here has been provide straightforward tabular data on how states compare in regard to a given characteristic. The overall goal of the "almanac of the 50 states" is to bring together into a single volume a wide variety of diverse information and present it, state-by-state, in a clear, principle format. It is not intended as a detailed research tool, but rather as a ready reference source, the 1st place to turn to answer basic questions about the state.
