Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book tells the story of a young girl named Lily who flees her life in Paris in the 1830s, seeking a new beginning in England. She is pursued by an unsavory group of individuals, including a waxwork showman, a quack doctor, and a woman known only as "the wild woman." Lilyââ â¢s flight from Paris is a powerful allegory for the search for freedom and independence in a world where women are often confined by societal expectations. The author explores themes of love, betrayal, poverty, and the social injustices of the time period. The book offers a glimpse into the realities of 19th-century life, highlighting the hardships faced by the poor and the complexities of navigating a society rife with contradictions. The author masterfully crafts a story that captures the stark social realities of the era, highlighting themes of class, wealth, and the vulnerability of those who lack power and privilege. Lily's journey takes her from a relatively sheltered life in a boarding school to a world of lavish parties and social climbers, where she encounters eccentric individuals like Sir William Long, a young man grappling with his own sense of isolation and discontent. As Lily's life becomes increasingly chaotic, the book explores the fragility of innocence and the dangers of unchecked ambition, ultimately leaving the reader to ponder the true cost of pursuing wealth and status in a society rife with inequality. Through Lily's poignant experiences, the author offers a thought-provoking commentary on the darker undercurrents of Victorian England and the profound impact of societal structures on individual lives.
