Alpha (α)-Terpineol: A Toxicological Perspective: On Reproduction, Development and Nervous System in Wistar Rats

Authored by Sneha Suma Hegde and Vijayakumar B. Malashetty, the studies examined the toxicological profile of alpha-terpineol (α-T) in Wistar rats, revealing significant adverse effects on reproductive, developmental, and neurological systems—particularly at higher concentrations. Their research identified key disruptions, including altered reproductive and developmental parameters, the onset of azoospermia, and changes in gene expression levels associated with these physiological impairments. The findings suggest that α-terpineol exposure may pose serious risks to reproductive health and overall biological development. Given its widespread use in consumer products, their work highlights the urgent need for further investigation into the compound’s long-term and chronic toxicological effects.
