Between Altars and Alliances: The Diplomatic Formation and Legacy of Pope Francis

How did a Jesuit from Argentina become one of the most influential global voices of the 21st century?

Between Altars and Alliances explores the international diplomatic legacy of Pope Francis—a pontificate shaped by spiritual depth, political paradox, and global urgency. As the first Jesuit and Latin American pope, Francis brought to the Vatican a unique blend of pastoral realism and geopolitical awareness, challenging traditional models of papal diplomacy.

In this thought-provoking work, drawn from his original PhD in International Relations, Dr Dimitri Tsakas explores how Pope Francis’ identity and formation—as a Jesuit, a Latin American, and a thinker shaped by broad intellectual and cultural influences—gave rise to a distinctive approach to international engagement. With clarity and insight, this book traces how that background shaped Pope Francis’ evolving relationships with major global powers—including the United States, Russia, and China.

At once spiritual and political, this book shows how Pope Francis redefined the Catholic Church’s role in global affairs—reshaping its diplomatic engagement in an era marked by rising authoritarianism and shifting global power.

Essential reading for students of international relations, papal diplomacy, Church history, and all who seek to understand the forces shaping the relationship between religion and global politics.
