Based on interviews, documents, and information from both sides of the Atlantic, including an expedition to Sweden to explore Russian-sponsored alt-right disinformatsiya, this book uncovers the truth about the undeclared conflict which has rocked democracy, peace, and stability across the West.
Over the course of an extensive investigation spanning Europe, North America, and beyond, Patrick has brought together experts, classified intelligence reports, public records, and witness testimony to build the most extensive and accurate account of Vladimir Putin's assault on the NATO allies to date. The book documents how detached and deniable assets, including Wikileaks and the far-right - including UKIP and Republican officials - were engaged by Russia to successfully subvert two of the world's superpowers and install managed democracies in the execution of a strategy planned over decades, to enhance the Russian position and destabilise its perceived enemies.
Alternative War exposes the depth and complexity of a hybrid world war and captures the methods used to profile and manipulate populations in order for Russia to emerge victorious. The book leads us to question everything about Western regulation and enforcement, setting accountability at the highest levels while empowering the people everywhere to help ensure the world is never taken by surprise again.

Review
"The term Hybrid Warfare had been used in many discussions around this but not articulated as clearly as JJ Patrick has done in Alternative War...I have not come across such a well-researched piece of what I would be very happy to call intelligence, where the facts are presented, assumptions, where made, are outlined and the thinking behind them justified and the analysis he presents is clear and logical. Starting with the Trump quote about Sweden and weaving a path through the Trump and Brexit campaigns, JJ Patrick exposes some very real concerns about meddling. He shows the power of Big Data and when used to manipulate an outcome, the very real effect a targeted psychological campaign can have...This book is a must read for politicians, journalists, academics and CEO's and directors of international companies."

"This is a book which paints a dark and sinister warning and it is a tale told in a manner which does not easily let you go. Patrick's former life as a cop is definitely evident here. His particular strength for identifying the key details first and then tying them together in a concise manner is vital in building the window through which we lay-people can see the world that he's seeing. Indeed more than a few times I could well imagine Patrick presenting sections of the book from a witness stand aided only by his trusty notebook...His narrative style is one of someone who is very clearly passionate about their work and his Herodotean admissions of the limits of his knowledge (particularly in areas such as internal political and cultural dynamics in places like Sweden) add to the world-building rather than subtract from it. Again, it is the mark of someone who sees the details that they might have to investigate later rather than that of someone who'd simply gloss over them or miss them altogether."
