Grade 1-3-- Raoul's family runs a laundry, but this lazy raccoon dreams of becoming famous and leaves them behind to find his destiny. After attempting several careers including that of a pilot (he blows up the plane), a motorcycle racer (he crashes), a scientist concocting a potion to make himself sexy (he becomes a green monster), Raoul is so discouraged that he prepares to jump off a skyscrapper. Fortunately the good fairy of lost causes, named "Good Byecruelworld," appears, utters some magic words, and helps Raoul invent the washing machine. Voila, he makes his fortune and becomes president of his own company. This story doesn't work as humor or as satire, and is generally inappropriate for children. The messages of misfortune and luck, hope and despair are too jumbled to have any positive effect. Illustrations consist of softly colored chalk and watercolor with many dark lines and shadings.
