From School Library Journal
Grade 4-7-- Surprises abound in an intriguing show of animal behavior set in natural habitats throughout the world. High-quality photographs capture the behavior of birds, insects, land mammals, and animals of the sea. Types of behavior are organized into five sections: motion, communication, raising of young, basic survival, and protection from enemies. Close-up, full-page, and some sequential photographs make a particular behavior easy to identify. Captions are lengthy, thoroughly describing the photographs. The text is not as exciting as the photographs, but headings and captions use catchy phrases such as "Motion: It's the Only Way to Go" to reach the intended audience. However, readers may be distracted by the double-page spreads that do not relate to the immediate topic of discussion and interrupt the flow of text. The index includes illustrations as well as text. The book can be enjoyed by browsers who seek information only through pictures, or by children who want general information about animal behavior. --Diane Nunn, Richard E. Byrd Elem .
