Map. Engraving with hand coloring. Image measures 10 1/4" x 7 7/8". Beautiful map of North America and South America by Herman Moll that is rich in speculative cartography from the time; California appears as an island and the mythical Lakes Iarajes (Xarayes) and Parima are shown in South America. The map covers from Baffin's Bay south as far as Tierra del Fuego. England, Ireland, and Scotland appear in the north-easternmost corner. "Variable winds" are depicted with arrows, hachure, and coloring-- a unique feature for a map of this time. This edition has beautiful hand coloring and shows mountain ranges, rivers, and lakes. Insular California was first mentioned in the early 16th century. Although contrary evidence from various explorers was available by the 17th century that California was in fact a peninsula, cartographers remained divided on the subject and California continued to appear on maps as an island. Marked Vol. 3 p. 129. In good condition, some wear and discoloration around fold lines. Of German or Dutch origin, Herman Moll (c. 1654-1732) settled in London in the 1670's where he worked as an engraver for Moses Pitt. By the turn of the century, Moll became the foremost map publisher in England, where he produced Atlases and maps. As an engraver, cartographer, map seller and globe maker he appealed to the public with his unusual views and vignettes. As the demand for his work was sustained, he issued many revised editions of his work.
