The American Archives contain the most important documents from the American Revolutionary period, collected and published by Peter Force. Force envisioned a total of 20 volumes, however only 9 were published. The highly desirable Fourth Series (published in 6 volumes) covers the period between March 07, 1774 to The Declaration of Independence. Volumes were published between 1837 and 1846. Congress authorized up to 1500 copies of Peter Force's book documenting the nation's history to be printed, but subscriptions fell short of that number. The actual number of copies of the book printed is unknown, with estimates ranging around 500 copies. Fewer than half are believed to have survived. In 1867, The Library of Congress purchased Force's massive collection of documents relating to American history, establishing the basis of its 18th century collection.
