Dating from 1822 to 1998, the selected works include paintings, drawings, sculpture, prints, and photographs, all of which illustrate the amazing breadth of American art in the museum. Each work receives a short, illuminating essay accompanied by a detailed sidebar with a biographical sketch of the artist. Individually significant, these well-written and dynamic entries together represent a nearly comprehensive picture of American creativity over the last two centuries.
