This lavish volume relates its history and presents masterworks from 1822 to 1998, with an essay about each and a biography of each artist.
The curatorial staff of the Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth, TX, has written and assembled a superb survey of the museum collection that spans two centuries of American art. Produced on the 40th anniversary of the opening of the original museum in 1961, this work also commemorates the newly completed expansion of the museum. The survey includes works by Charles M. Russell and Frederic Remington, the Western artists who formed the foundations of the museum, but the 125 pieces displayed here tell a far broader tale about American art. Dating from 1822 to 1998, the selected works include paintings, drawings, sculpture, prints, and photographs, all of which illustrate the amazing breadth of American art in the museum. Each work receives a short, illuminating essay accompanied by a detailed sidebar with a biographical sketch of the artist. Individually significant, these well-written and dynamic entries together represent a nearly comprehensive picture of American creativity over the last two centuries. Highly recommended for all libraries with American art collections. Kraig Binkowski, Delaware Art Museum, Wilmington
