Full leather, gilt rules, marbled edges, illustrations throughout text. A revision of Webster's monumental achievement of lexicography, abridged by J.E. Worcester. A contemporary of Noah Webster, Joseph Emerson Worcester was a lexicographer who also worked on Webster's Dictionary, but published several dictionaries and other reference works as well. He and Webster engaged in what are now known as The Dictionary Wars, in which Webster slung accusations of plagiarism, while Worcester maintained that his work was his own. Includes prefaces to the 1829 and 1841 editions; guides to pronunciation; an appendix with words added since the publication of the larger work; John Walker's A Key to the Classical Pronunciation of Greek, Latin, and Scripture Proper Names; in which the words are accented and divided into syllables exactly as they ought to be pronounced, according to the rules drawn from analogy and the best usage. to which are added Terminational Vocabularies of Hebrew, Greek, and Latin Proper Names. in which the words are arranged according to their final syllables, and classed according to their accents, by which the general analogy of pronunciation may be seen at one view, and the accentuation of each word more easily remembered.; Rules for the Pronunciation of Scripture Proper Names.; Plan of the Octavo Dictionary with Recommendations of This and the Original Work.…
