American Espionage and the Soviet Target

This account of how the United States spies on the Soviet Union discusses electronic surveillance techniques and the inner-workings of intelligence organizations

Despite its brevity, Richelson's book offers a comprehensive portrait of U.S. intelligence gathering efforts directed at the Soviet Union. Richelson, a professor at American University and a specialist on intelligence, has sifted through documents, interviews, and published research. He eschews interpretation and relies on description. The book covers HUMINT (spies) SIGINT (technical means of collection), and the wide variety of efforts from naval signal interceptions to overflight photography. It will be valuable not only to specialists in the intelligence area but also to congressmen, journalists, and citizens concerned with the critical, legal, moral, and strategic questions raised.
