In an introductory statement, author Elisha J. Lewis notes that in this Third Edition of The American Sportsman, "a number of illustrations have been added, and the text somewhat enlarged." This is a guide to the sport of shooting game birds (with a few sections about shooting rabbits, hares, and squirrels). The following are some of the chapter titles: "Exposition of the Technical Terms Used by Ornithologists," "Sensation in Feathers," "Sporting Terms," "Art of Shooting on the Wing," "The Partridge. Perdix Virginianus," "The Wild Turkey. Meleagris Gallipavo," "The Ruffled Grouse, or Pheasant. Tetrao Umbellus," "Pinnated Grouse, or Prairie-Hen. Tetrao Cupido," "The Woodcock. Scolopax Minor," "Wilson's, or English Snipe. Scolopax Wilsonii--Scolopax Gallinago," "Reed-Bird, or Rice Bunting. Emberiza Oryzivora," "The Rail, or Sora. Rallus Carolinus," "Clapper-Rail, or Mud-Hen. Rallus Crepitans," "Long-billed Curlew, or Sickle Bill. Numenius Longirostris," "Black-bellied Plover. Charadrius Apricarius," "Semipalmated Snipe, Willet, or Stone-Curlew. Scolopax Semipalmata," "Red-breasted Snipe. Scolopax Noveboracensis," "Wild-Fowl Shooting," and "Canvas-Back. Anas Valisineria." Following these chapters (and a few more) are brief sections about different hunting techniques such as point-shooting and implements such as dugouts and boxes, more game birds such as ducks and geese, hunting rabbits and squirrels, miscellaneous advice about game shooting, ordering guns, proving and staining barrels, wire-twist and charcoal iron, wood for stocking, cooking game birds and rabbits (a few brief recipes for sauces and garnishes included), taxidermy hints (including advice for how to preserve bird eggs and bird carcasses), and advice for hygiene while in the field (including a few treatments for common injuries or wounds). Illustrations designed by George G. White and engraved by Louderback & Hoffmann.…
