Octavo, navy blue cloth (hardcover), gilt letters, map illustrated endpapers, xxiv, 166 pp. Fine (As New) in a Fine (As New) dust jacket. From dust jacket: Florida's Second Seminole War, 1835 - 42, has perenially fascinated readers and historians alike. It was the longest, costliest, and bloodiest Indian war in American history, and the conflict pitted great Seminole leaders like Osceola, Micanopy, Jumper, and Alligator against a stellar cast of U. S. military officers including Maj. Francis Langhorne Dade and Generals Edmund Gaines, Winfrield Scott, Duncan Clinch, Thomas Jesup, Zachary Taylor, Abraham Eustis, and W. K. Armistead. Fighting amidst the hot and humid, insect-infested wildernesses of palms and swamps, a cast of unknown soldiers shaped the history of future generations. One of the most extraordinary of those unknown soldiers was a young lieutenant named Henry Prince, who now brings the details of the Seminole War brilliantly to life in the pages of a truly remarkable American diary. The tale of how this long-lost diary was discovered and transcribed by historian Frank Laumer is intriguing in itself. Yet beyond the fortunate circumstances of its survival and transcription. Prince's diary is cause for celebration as a document written by a West Point graduate whose knowledge of military tactics brings authority to all its observations. Add to this the fact that Prince was an astute observer, a man of intelligence and insight, an accomplished artist and cartographer who included sketches, maps, and diagrams to illustrate his text, a man of conscience and profound sensitivity who recorded more than facts alone, and you begin to appreciate the book before you for its great historical importance and deep human interest.
