About the Author: Michael Oates of late was a professor of French at the University of Northern Iowa from 1967 to 2003. He received his Ph.D. in French from Georgetown University and was certified as an ACTFL Oral Proficiency Tester in French. In 1989, he won the ACTFL Nelson Brooks Award for Excellence in the Teaching of Culture. He is a Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Palmes Academiques.
