I sat down to read The Amish Spaceman yesterday, and what a very zany and incredibly fun ride it is, let me tell you! It would be difficult to sufficiently describe what goes on throughout this wacky but wonderful work in the space of a book review like this, but to get a small taste of what you're in for, simply consider just a few of the diverse cast of characters, costumes, and machines you encounter within: a protagonist named Dean (not Dane) Cook who is a wannabe motivational speaker that cannot seem to get a lucky break anywhere; his very capable, long-suffering assistant Lin; Dean's cross-dressing dad and very manly mom whose well-meaning attempts down through the years to throw a successful birthday party for their son always go spectacularly bad (in a Cecil B. DeMille sort of way); a Godzilla costume; a beautiful runaway bride-to-be from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky called Emerson and her very large female guardian who is trying to help her escape marriage to Duke Nichego, richest man of Kamchatka and possessed of a peculiar fetish for women's socks; the Duke's hapless and well-armed chauffeur Vassily; Amish attire; some very cool vintage warplanes, and a series of Native Americans all oddly named Tony who seem to appear everywhere Dean goes. As a last-ditch effort to finally find success, Dean sets out from California for his scheduled appearance at a motivational speaker conference in West Virginia while encountering, being accompanied by, or escaping from the above-mentioned characters. The oddball story is told well, and the excitement is never ending, too: you get car chases, shootouts, mistaken identities, a parachute jump, a WWII warplane carrying legally questionable cargo, exploding gas stations, and river barge filled with flour. Intrigued yet?

Author Steve Colegrove's mindset & style occupies a space not far away from the likes of Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett; indeed, there is a whiff of British-style irony to be found in places. That said, this is a very American work. The book is peppered throughout with references direct and oblique to familiar 1980's-90's American cultural life that honestly had me guffawing out loud. Going in, I had a faint idea of the kind of humor it would entail, i.e. slightly "geeky" yet with clever dialog and ironic asides in the narration. Frankly, it's a style that only appeals to me personally when the clever bits are done well (read: unselfconsciously). However, I'm pleased to say any doubts I may have had quickly evaporated. I found this book to be genuinely entertaining... and ZANY... from start to finish. The characters are well developed, and each is given a distinctive (and usually very funny) personality and often some great, silly lines. What's more, the author manages all of this without even once resorting to the gratuitous "shock value" trappings that all too often plague contemporary humorous works. I find that in itself quite a feat, and it helped make this an even more refreshing read. Finally, Mr. Colegrove has done readers an additional favor by creating a Spotify playlist of songs that do much to set the intended mood of each chapter. All these things considered, The Amish Spaceman is a consistently entertaining and very worthwhile read. Highly recommended!
